Project
Design a bold, fiery CD package using a mix of supplied photos, original photos, and original art to represent the artist's fiery musicianship and unique stage act.
Client
Em K., a local solo acoustic guitarist with a bold and fiery act.
Contributions
- Disc package and disc surface design
- Original photography, video, and image creation
- Image editing
- Typesetting
- File setup for print production and digital display
The Challenge
Em K. is a solo acoustic guitarist who performs energetic original arrangements of classic rock songs while engaging his audience with a stage show of slinging his guitar high in the air and catching it mid song. He needed original CD art and design that:
- Presents an exciting image of his performance being "on fire"
- Artfully Illustrates the nature of his unique guitar throwing act
- Is professionally designed and set up to the print specs of his chosen CD manufacturer
- Can be reproduced for digital download and streaming
- Could be extended to related promotional material
The Solution
Working under my old CD design and duplication business name, White Giraffe Productions, I:
- Scheduled client consultations to understand his visions and goals for the CD product and his musical act
- Took video of his guitar slinging act and extracted still frames into a composite image to capture a sense of motion
- Photographed his special thin-line electric-style acoustic guitar and created original flame effects in Photoshop, rendering the guitar bursting into flames
- Carried the flame-colored theme through the package design and typography for a cohesive look
- Laid out art and text in the CD manufacturer's templates to ensure proper specs for printing and bindery
The Outcome
- Successfully delivered the album design to the manufacturer for productions
- "Extreme Solo Acoustic Guitar" Released in 2006
- Sales of his album were so successful, Em K. reordered and sold hundreds more copies of his CD
In the course of multiple re-orders of the CD, I also designed a promotional poster with his "Listen at your own risk" warning label idea at the top of the CD cover image.
